   Characters

Have you often wondered how DAZ and Curious Labs create poseable figures? It might seem like magic and high-end programming to you, but the truth is it's much more simpler than you think.

In this turorial, I'll show you how it's done and together, we'll create our very own simple poseable character called Plank ;)

First of all, you don't need a modelling program at all to follow this tutorial. All you need is a few simple primitives from the Props section of the Poser library to create your character.

Start with an empty Poser scene and load a cube into your scene from Poser's Props library :

Next, use the yScale and zScale to flatten and stretch the cube into the body of our charcter Plank:

Add in two spheres for the eyes and flatten a torus for the mouth:

Now that our character Plank has taken shape, click on the square Grouping Tool and assign materials for each item on our character - select each of Plank's eyes with your mouse and assign the material 'EYES' for them, then assign 'MOUTH' for Plank's mouth and 'BODY' for the body:

Once done, from the Poser top menu, choose File>Export>Wavefront OBJ and save the entire scene on your hard drive. Start again with an empty Poser scene and import the object you saved (Plank) back into your scene - you'll see that Plank's eyes and mouth are now welded to his body. Enter the Materials room and you'll see that Plank has 3 seperate materials - EYES, MOUTH and BODY. Give each of them a nice color and you have a base character to work with:

Next, lets make Plank a poseable character - enter the Setup Room with Plank, and from the bottom, draw two bones for Plank's body using the 'Bone Creation Tool' :

With the bones done, click on the Setup room's Grouping Tool. Once the Grouping Tool menu is up, click on the 'New Group' button followed by the 'Auto Group' button. Close the Grouping Tool menu and exit the Setup room .

If you have done everything right then you'll now discover that you have your very own poseable character - Plank :)

You now have an understanding of the basics of how companies like DAZ builds poseable figures like Victoria 3, Aiko 3 and The Girl

Now all that poor Plank needs are some limbs to put on that boot ;) -
