   Capes

When it comes to fantasy scenes, nothing can be more essential than a well posed cape on a character that adds mood, drama and action to your artwork.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to work with capes available at Planetvixens to get that 'wind-blown' effect you've always wanted.

Planetvixens capes usually comes in four segments (picture below). The first part, or the 'Chest' of the cape will automatically conform to your figure's pose. The following parts (Part 1, 2 and 3) you will need to manually adjust to get the effects you need.

Each of the custom segment of the cape (Parts 1, 2 and 3) has all the usual movement parameters that you will encounter on any Poser item - Bend, Side-Side and Twist. In addition, you also will find extra parameters: xTran, yTran and zTran - these are used to literally translate the cape in their respective directions.

The translation settings can be extremely useful when posing the cape and getting it out of the way of Victoria to avoid poke-thrus.

Furthermore, remember to take advantage of the often-neglected xScale, yScale and zScale settings to lengthen and flare out the cape.

For this tutorial, we will be using the Princess of The Elves II outfit - available at the Planetvixens' Fantasywear section. We will put the outfit (including the cape) on Victoria 3 and give her a simple pose. You could see the results in the picture below:

We want to give the cape the look of being blown by wind from the left. The Chest segment is already conformed to Victoria so we'll skip that segment. Use your mouse and select Part 1 (bone_1) - use the Side-Side dial to bend the cape to the right a little and use the zTran dial to move the cape back and away from poking through Victoria's arm. Next select Part 2 (bone_2) and use the Side-Side dial to bend it a little more to the right - you'll now notice that your entire cape is starting to swing to the right - as if being blown by wind coming from the left.

Finally, we'll tackle the last segment: Part 3 (bone_3). Select it and instead of continuing to bend it to the right, use the Side-Side dial to swing it back to the left a little to simulate the weight of the cape. As an added 'artistic' touch, increase the xScale of the segment to around 150% to flare out the cape. You could also use the yTran or the yScale tool to lengthen the cape. Here's how it looks so far with our adjustments:

And there you have it - a cape fit for your fantasy artworks :) -
